Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatment

The intense pulsed light treatment, also called an IPL treatment or photofacial, is performed at our dermatology office by our medically trained aestheticians. This light therapy is indicated for the treatment of red and brown spots.

The IPL laser is commonly used to treat lesions on the face, neck, chest and hands. The most commonly treated areas are those exposed to direct sunlight, causing sun damage, brown spots, broken capillaries, and other imperfections. IPL therapy is used to dramatically improve the appearance of skin without damage.

Which skin concerns can be managed with IPL therapy (photofacial)?

  • Large sun spots (solar lentigines)

  • Broken capillaries

There is minimal downtime, however, if it is your first treatment in our clinic we recommend that you do not travel or plan family photos for a week after your treatment.

IPL Preparation and Aftercare

Your Master Aesthetician will determine the best IPL setting for your skin, then protect your eyes with coverings. The IPL handpiece applies pulses of light across the problem area.

Skin will appear textured and may feel similar to a sunburn for up to 7 days after IPL treatment. Swelling and bruising may occur as the skin heals. Wait for the redness to subside before applying makeup (about 24 hours) and follow your Master Aesthetician’s instructions for aftercare.
