Rashes

Skin rashes are uncomfortable, alarming, and sometimes unsightly. Some can be easily treated with over-the-counter remedies, while others may be a symptom of something more severe. Unfortunately, there’s no one explanation for why rashes form or spread. It may be caused by an allergic reaction, illness, or even stress. So when should you seek professional help?

  • Always seek immediate help if your rash occurs shortly after eating, taking medication or being stung by an insect and continues to aggressively spread.

  • Seek help if you’re experiencing other symptoms like joint pain, body aches, swelling of the tongue, throat, or mouth, skin tenderness, or breathlessness.

  • Upon noticing the rash, make a note of anything different you’ve consumed or had skin contact with. It may be helpful for identifying skin allergies.

When should I see a dermatologist for a rash?

If your rash doesn’t require immediate attention but persists with the following symptoms, that’s when a dermatologist should step in. Contact Dr. Ramirez if:

  • Over-the-counter remedies aren’t helping

  • The rash hasn’t gone away or improved within 48 hours

  • It’s spreading

  • It’s oozing or showing other signs of infection

  • It’s blistering, swelling, peeling, or turning dark

  • It’s painful

  • It’s interfering with your life

Rashes are incredibly common and have various causes. If you don’t see improvements within a few days, don’t hesitate to seek help. In our office, we’ve seen patients who’ve suffered with rashes for months experience improvements over just a few days. Frequently, conservative treatments like prescription creams or oral medication work wonders for stubborn rashes. The first step is contacting our North Ogden Dermatology office for a consultation.
