Moles, cysts, and lipomas

We will all have marks and blemishes sometime in our lives. While most are harmless, others may require a dermatologist's help for removal and treatment. Our board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Lori Ramirez, can evaluate dark spots and lesions to determine if they are concerning and whether they should be removed.

Common skin growths

Several skin conditions can cause lumps, bumps, or raised areas on the skin. Sometimes these areas are tender. Other times, you may experience itching, irritation, or no sensation at all. A few common causes of skin growths include:

  • Moles appear around birth and appear pink, tan or brown and may be flat or raised. The average adult has about 30 moles by adulthood. It is important to get your moles checked by a dermatologist if there is a family history of skin cancer, if you’ve used a tanning bed, LOTS of moles, or have a history of sunburns as a child.

  • Cysts are closed pockets that can contain a protein called keratin. Most cysts are painless, but they can become inflamed or irritated if they get infected.

  • Lipomas are benign fatty tumors that develop between the skin and the underlying muscle. They are slow-growing and typically harmless. However, if they are painful or cause irritation, you may choose to get the lipoma removed
