What is melasma?

Melasma is a darkening of the skin as a result of sun-exposure, hormonal changes (e.g. birth control, pregnancy). It is very important to apply a broad spectrum sun block every 2 hours while outdoors or driving while receiving treatments in our office. Our aestheticians frequently treat melasma with chemical peels and/or microneedling along with the use of our lightening system.

The treatment process

Achieving an even and uniform skin color begins the use a topical creams and serums for melasma, acne, and other pigmentary concerns.  The addition of chemical peels, microneedling and lasers are added to enhance the outcome and brighten the skin. One way this system works is by having a direct suppression of a pigment that causes are skin to darken (melanin).

How many treatments are necessary to achieve results?

Most patients will need several treatments with a peel, microneedling or laser treatments. These are typically scheduled every 4-6 weeks. Like dental cleaning, it is important that you keep your skin healthy with routine treatments.
